A Conversation with Martina

kaciatko ‎(8:32 AM):
You added kaciatko
kaciatko ‎(8:32 AM):
Hi Sara
You are early
Sara Beth ‎(8:33 AM):
hey martina
yeah i just woke up
kaciatko ‎(8:33 AM):
good morning, I will go sleep in few hours
kaciatko ‎(8:34 AM):
how are you?
Sara Beth ‎(8:34 AM):
pretty good...actually a little stressed, i have ap exams coming up this week and next.
kaciatko ‎(8:34 AM):
exams at Punahou or to Univesity ?
Sara Beth ‎(8:35 AM):
well the exams take place at punahou, but if i score either a 4 or 5 i can probably get some type of college credit when i go to school next year.
the scoring is out of a 5
kaciatko ‎(8:36 AM):
understand..good luck !
Sara Beth ‎(8:36 AM):
thank you!
how are you doing?
kaciatko ‎(8:36 AM):
I am fine, watching hockey worldchampionship, we won today ! do you watch it as well ? we lost on Thursday with you (US)
Sara Beth ‎(8:37 AM):
wow that must be exciting! no, i don't normally watch sports games. is hockey very popular in slovakia?
kaciatko ‎(8:38 AM):
yes, the most popular one
especially when there is olympic games or worldchampionship like this one, everybody, all Slovak are like one family I like that feeling
Sara Beth ‎(8:40 AM):
that's sooo cool! yeah, the only time i experienced a feeling like that was when i went to amsterdam during some football/soccor championship in june. everybody was celebrating and having a good time.
not so much in hawaii though
maybe if you count university football games and such
kaciatko ‎(8:42 AM):
yes, soccer is very popular in amsterdam.. you have american football, I think that's nr. 1 in US, right ?
kaciatko ‎(8:43 AM):
I dont' like it too much..went to several matches when I have been to Hawaii, but didn't really enjoy
Sara Beth ‎(8:44 AM):
yeah i've been to couple, even in the high school level, but i'm not much of a huge football fan.
baseball's pretty popular in the mainland united states
kaciatko ‎(8:44 AM):
me to, actually I was at Punahou at some matches
kaciatko ‎(8:45 AM):
hope was american football and not baseball since I always mix it up
we don't have it here so I can never remember
Sara Beth ‎(8:46 AM):
you probably went to football. baseball is just with bats and a smaller ball
kaciatko ‎(8:46 AM):
probably
kaciatko ‎(8:47 AM):
yeah, football, you are right
Sara Beth ‎(8:48 AM):
hmm shall we discuss the literature?
kaciatko ‎(8:50 AM):
yes, you can start asking hope I will be able to answer your questions
are there any specific questions you are going to ask ? I mean, any question set by your teacher or so ?
Sara Beth ‎(8:51 AM):
no there aren't set questions really. i'll just ask a couple.
kaciatko ‎(8:51 AM):
ok, start
Sara Beth ‎(8:52 AM):
how is this story viewed in slovakia? i know in some cultures the values portrayed in a story reflect a lot about the values of the people. is it similar to this?
kaciatko ‎(8:54 AM):
hm...good question but hard to say...everybody is different. There are good people and bad people everywhere. It is said, Slovaks are very famous through their hospitality..there are many good people here who can help you, friendy, with smile on their face... on the other hand, you can find exceptions as it is everywhere..hm..did I answer the question ?
kaciatko ‎(8:55 AM):
It's kind of interesting, but many tales we have in Slovakia are in 80% similar to this...one is good, one is bad and the good wins over evil at the end
Sara Beth ‎(8:56 AM):
haha yeah definitely like in america
kaciatko ‎(8:56 AM):
yes, happy end...
kaciatko ‎(8:57 AM):
but I mean these characters...in many tales (at least in the filmed ones) there are usually 2 daughters, one is good and one is opposite to her, but the mother loves the bad and hates the good one..
Sara Beth ‎(8:57 AM):
i don't know much about the slovak culture so this is kind of a broad question, but what is the slovak culture like? including hospitality and such?
really?
kaciatko ‎(8:58 AM):
usually..what I know tales, many are like these
maybe I am wrong since I don't read too much, I don't like books )))
but what I remember from childhood, heh
Sara Beth ‎(8:59 AM):
haha. yeah it seems that the fairytales are very similiar everywhere.
kaciatko ‎(9:00 AM):
yeah, I am sure...
what is typical for Slovaks..it is typicall for Slovaks to welcome people with bread and salt (slovak habit) , like when you give leis in Hawaii
kaciatko ‎(9:01 AM):
but this is only in kind of special occasions, for example there is a visit of G. Bush in Slovakia, so he would be welcome this way... It doesn't mean if you come to visit me, you would eat only bread and salt
Sara Beth ‎(9:02 AM):
i see. so it's more for important figures, like presidents, diplomats, more for famous people as well?
kaciatko ‎(9:03 AM):
yes, exactly
kaciatko ‎(9:04 AM):
our culture is very reach, there are many traditions, celebrations and customs ...
Sara Beth ‎(9:05 AM):
oooh what kind of traditions and customs?
kaciatko ‎(9:06 AM):
uuuuf...many..let me think
Sara Beth ‎(9:06 AM):
or the more main traditions and celebrations
kaciatko ‎(9:06 AM):
http://www.slovakia.org/society.htm
kaciatko ‎(9:09 AM):
typical Christmas...Easter, celebrating of new year..
for example on Easter we don't look for eggs...
Sara Beth ‎(9:09 AM):
is more religious than commercial then?
kaciatko ‎(9:10 AM):
both...
boys make easter whips, we paint eggss..
Sara Beth ‎(9:11 AM):
easter whips?
kaciatko ‎(9:11 AM):
http://user.intop.net/~jhollis/easter.htm
kaciatko ‎(9:12 AM):
yes..whips...or the boys splash the water on girls..99% of women hate this customs you are always wet, have to change your clothes 10 times on this day
kaciatko ‎(9:13 AM):
they have either a bucket full of water and just pour it on girls or you end up in a shower with all your clothes on
Sara Beth ‎(9:14 AM):
is that suppose to signify anything in particular?
kaciatko ‎(9:14 AM):
so this is one of the custome..
In most areas of Slovakia whippers carry perfume. A successful whipping often ends with the whipper lightly spraying the girl with perfume.
kaciatko ‎(9:15 AM):
This ritual symbolizes the renewal of life in spring and the expression of unity with nature
Sara Beth ‎(9:16 AM):
is this activity between younger children or include all ages?
kaciatko ‎(9:16 AM):
all ages
Sara Beth ‎(9:17 AM):
hahaha. i was looking at the pictures on the site, those eggs are so ornate and intricate! the eggs here are just dyed with food coloring.
kaciatko ‎(9:17 AM):
but sprinkling with water is usually among youngers..but all depends on men some are so crazy that they would sprink even old ladies on their way from the church
Sara Beth ‎(9:18 AM):
haha no one's safe
kaciatko ‎(9:18 AM):
we have beautiful eggs, many many are handmade..I think all..this is one of the traditon as well
kaciatko ‎(9:19 AM):
yes, you have to watch every boy since even the one who don't know you may sprink you on the street..boys have fun but girls don't !
kaciatko ‎(9:20 AM):
Sara, the project is only talking about the literature or about the country as well ?
when I have been to Hawaii, I had presentation about SLovakia..andabout these customs as well, it was at Punahou..
Sara Beth ‎(9:21 AM):
it's actually pretty opened. it stems from the literature, but seeing as the values of the story is very similar to the one in america, the conversation can diverge
kaciatko ‎(9:22 AM):
I would suggest you to read something about our habits, like this one on Easter for example. since this is something really typical and different from the US
Sara Beth ‎(9:23 AM):
right
kaciatko ‎(9:23 AM):
I remember when talking about the wips and how the boys lace (lash) girls with it how some of the people in audience at Punahou were scared and kept asking me if it doesn't heart
kaciatko ‎(9:24 AM):
sorrz, hurt รด0
hurt..
Sara Beth ‎(9:24 AM):
it probably doesn't i'm guessing?
kaciatko ‎(9:25 AM):
http://referaty.atlas.sk/cudzie-jazyky/anglictina/18862/slovak-customs-and-traditions
it depends on boy
Sara Beth ‎(9:26 AM):
i see
kaciatko ‎(9:26 AM):
sometimes it does...but even withing slovakia whipping is not common everywhere..for example I come from east part of Slovakia, in our part is more water typicall to celebrate the easter..in the west and around the capital city, the boys lash more
Sara Beth ‎(9:27 AM):
ouch. is west and east slovakia different?
kaciatko ‎(9:28 AM):

http://www.cometoslovakia.com/folk.html

kaciatko ‎(9:29 AM):
not really but it is getting bigger...since many foreign investor are coming mainly to the capital city and around... I would say people in cities live different world than those in villages...
many customes and traditions are kept in villages mainly, not in the cities
Sara Beth ‎(9:30 AM):
cities more modernize
kaciatko ‎(9:30 AM):
yes
kaciatko ‎(9:36 AM):
hallooo
Sara Beth ‎(9:37 AM):
sorry about that. there was a complication with my computer
kaciatko ‎(9:38 AM):
no problem
Sara Beth ‎(9:39 AM):
sorry to ask you a lot about slovak culture, it just seems that american and slovak values are similiar in the twelve nights
*months
kaciatko ‎(9:40 AM):
that's fine..just ask when you have possibility
kaciatko ‎(9:42 AM):
I haven't seen cinderella in the us so not sure if it's similar but you have read the story and I told you something on the top of it so I am sure you see if there is difference or..
Sara Beth ‎(9:45 AM):
well in cinderella, there is a wicked step mother and two daughters and cinderella, a nice sweet daughter who is made the slave of the household. she has a fairy godmother who beautifies her for the huge ball where she meets the prince
when the clock strikes 12 pm she has to leave and leaves her crystal glass slipper at the steps where the prince finds it
Sara Beth ‎(9:46 AM):
the prince spends a lot of time trying to find the girl he met by having every fair maiden try it on to see if the shoe fits
ultimately he finds cinderella and they live happily ever after
kaciatko ‎(9:46 AM):
very similar to other fairytales in Slovakia
happy end
Sara Beth ‎(9:46 AM):
it centers around this whole good v. evil
kaciatko ‎(9:46 AM):
yes, we have it as well here in Slovakia..but I have seen film only
Sara Beth ‎(9:47 AM):
if you're patient, good and humble then that will get you far
but nowadays that isn't always the case, in real life that is
Sara Beth ‎(9:48 AM):
nowadays at least in the united states, everyone is so opportunisitic and will do anything to be successful
kaciatko ‎(9:49 AM):
I see
Sara Beth ‎(9:49 AM):
is it that way in slovakia?
kaciatko ‎(9:50 AM):
yes, everybody wants to be successful and there are some people who will do everything for it, even to loose their friends or so
Sara Beth ‎(9:51 AM):
yeah. it's unfortunate sometimes
kaciatko ‎(9:52 AM):
all is about people, about their priorities and values
Sara Beth ‎(9:54 AM):
definitely.
i'll be right back
kaciatko ‎(9:54 AM):
ok..don't be too long since I will fall asleep soon
Sara Beth ‎(9:56 AM):
k back
kaciatko ‎(9:57 AM):
ok
Sara Beth ‎(9:57 AM):
yeah it's getting late in slovak. do you have any last comments about the literature?
kaciatko ‎(9:58 AM):
no Sara...really, in my opinion kind of easy literature, not too much talking about..do you think you are able to prepare summary of this ?
Sara Beth ‎(9:58 AM):
yeah definitely.
if i have anymore questions i'll email you them asap
kaciatko ‎(9:58 AM):
Uff... I am glad are you going to prepare like a presentation about it ?
kaciatko ‎(9:59 AM):
no problem, we'll be still in touch
Sara Beth ‎(9:59 AM):
what's going to happen is that i will prepare a little web page about our convos, emails, info on slovakia, the literature and such
yeah we'll definitely be in touch
kaciatko ‎(9:59 AM):
if it helps, have a look at some of the links I have sent you here tonight (this morning
kaciatko ‎(10:37 AM):
ok Sara, any other questions ?
I am going to sleep
Sara Beth ‎(10:38 AM):
no i think that's it
yeah go to sleep it's late
kaciatko ‎(10:38 AM):
ok, if yes, write me..
Sara Beth ‎(10:38 AM):
i will
kaciatko ‎(10:38 AM):
ok, was nice talking to you. Enjoy the day !
Good night
Sara Beth ‎(10:38 AM):
